Mailchimp has just announced a brand new Shopify integration. Now you may be wondering “Wait a minute, hasn’t Mailchimp integrated with Shopify all along?” The answer is that Mailchimp used to have a Shopify integration, but they had discontinued it. In fact, Mailchimp left Shopify 2 1/2 years ago when, in 2019, Mailchimp and Shopify had a rather public and unamicable divorce.
As TechCrunch explained back then, Mailchimp said that it was owing to Shopify’s newly-updated terms. In the piece, Mailchimp’s Joni Deus, Director of Partnerships, told TechCrunch that it was a privacy concern, as under the new terms Shopify wanted any and all data that Mailchimp collected on their users, saying that “Anything that hurts our customers’ privacy was a non-starter for us.”
On the other hand, Shopify complained that “Mailchimp refuses to synchronize customer information captured on merchants’ online stores and email opt-out preferences. As a result, our merchants, other apps, and partner ecosystem can’t reliably serve their customers or comply with privacy legislation.”
Meanwhile, over at the Shopify site at the same time, users were noticing and remarking on the marked absence of the Mailchimp Shopify app, leading “Sunny” from Shopify to post, saying that “We can confirm that Mailchimp is no longer available on the Shopify app store. If you would like to learn more about why this decision was made, you can find a full explanation on this forum post here. We understand and appreciate that email marketing is an integral part of your marketing initiatives. If you are looking for alternative options, we offer a wide variety of email marketing apps that can be found in the Shopify App Store.”
Fast forward two-and-a-half years, to October 26, 2021, and whaddaya know! Mailchimp has announced that they are back together!
Said Mailchimp, in their announcement of the Mailchimp Shopify partnership, “Mailchimp is excited to announce that we’ve partnered with Shopify to deliver a new direct integration available today. New and existing users of Mailchimp and Shopify will be able to connect their Mailchimp account with their Shopify storefront through a direct integration, eliminating the need for third-party tools and manual data transfers.”
The announcement goes on to say that “By connecting Mailchimp and Shopify directly, merchants will be able to combine the power of purchase data with marketing data and use those insights to help drive conversions, increase revenue, and reach more customers at the right point of their buying journey. We’re launching this new direct integration now so that our small business customers are ready to connect with their audiences and make this one of their most profitable holiday selling seasons yet.”
