Surge in Spam for the Games

Well, it was bound to happen. As Olympics frenzy ramps-up, so do spammers. Olympic-mania has inspired a fresh crop of spam scams, aimed at parting unsuspecting email recipients with their money. The London 2012 games website has warned against a couple of different scams, including offers of fake tickets to the games and spam emails encouraging recipients to give personal information in exchange for the release of prize winnings.

Other spam has included:

* Emails telling the recipient that they have won the “Olympic lottery”
* Emails asking manufacturing companies to pay large fees so that they can provide items for the Olympic Games
* Emails telling recipients that, for a fee, they can apply for a job with the Olympic Games

Of course, this also means that emails with the word “Olympic” in them will increasingly be marked as spam, causing legitimate emails with that word to end up in the spam box. What this means for you is that, if you are having any sort of celebrations or promotions for the Olympics and plan on sending any emails about it, your email could end up in someone’s spam box. The key is to ensure that you employ all other email best practices to ensure that your Olympic-related email reaches its intended recipient.
